Side Benefit of Space Travel Brings Advance in Bone Health…

Posted By Dr. Mercola | November 09 2010 | 243 views

human skeletonOlder adults could benefit from vibration, according to a new study. Whole-body vibration treatments could help reduce the bone loss that occurs as people age.

Numerous previous studies have examined the benefits of vibration on bone density. A 2008 study also found a significant improvement in bone mineral density, as well as a reduction in back pain.

EMax Health reports:

“Vibration is proving useful in other areas of bone health, especially in people who have fractures … [S]tudies show vibration slows stem cell proliferation, which leads to more stem cells becoming bone cells rather than continuing on to make more stem cells. Other studies have shown that vibration can also improve weight loss and muscle strength.”

Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

Whole body vibration (WBV) platforms originate from research conducted during the 1960s space race. The more precise scientific term for this though is acceleration training. It works on the principle of Newton’s second law of thermodynamics, which you might recall from high school physics class.

Force = Mass X Acceleration

Normally we are only dealing with acceleration due to the force of gravity or 1G and the only way we vary the force in exercise is to increase the weight. However if you examine the equation you can easily see that you can increase the force by increasing acceleration by increasing the G force to 2 or more.

These systems work by having a plate that is driven by a motor to rapidly move up and down several millimeters typically between 30 and 50 times per second. The more rapid the oscillations or the larger the plate displacement the higher the G forces. Some machines will reach G forces of 8, or eight times the force of gravity.

However, acceleration training is not only effective at building muscle mass, it may help build bone mass too. NASA has tested vibration platforms to help prevent the bone loss that occurs during space travel, and now researchers are looking into more “earth-bound” uses for the machines as well.

In a new study by Medical College of Georgia researchers, using vibration therapy 30 minutes daily for 12 weeks improved bone density in mice, a finding that adds support for their use in humans, especially the elderly.

It’s thought that the vibrations prompt movement of the cell nucleus, which may trigger the release of osteoblasts to build bone.

Previous studies have also found that acceleration training increases bone density in the hip and inhibits bone loss in the spine and hip areas.

Emerging Benefits of Whole Body Acceleration

As Dr. Keith DeOrio, M.D. explained in another article, your entire body musculature, as well as your internal organs and glands, are affected by acceleration training

Your muscle spindles fire secondary to the mechanical stimulation produced by the vibrating plate, and this rapid firing of the muscle spindle causes a neuromuscular response that leads to physiological changes in your brain as well as your entire body.

Traumas and injuries can leave cellular memories in your brain or body tissue that impede normal body movement or function, even after they’re healed. Using acceleration training allows your body and brain to rapidly de-imprint these old cell traumas, re-imprinting with positive, healthy information.

This allows for better and more efficient rehabilitation of injuries from sports or surgery than traditional methods of therapy.

Since acceleration training is accomplished with very little stress to your joints, tendons and ligaments — essentially you stand or perform slow specific movements on a vibrating platform — it can be a very good therapy regimen if you’ve suffered injuries, if you’re elderly, or if you have disease conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia or multiple sclerosis, which would normally limit your fitness program.

According to Dr. DeOrio, studies have shown that a mere 12 minutes of training on a WBV plate is equal to a 1.5-hour workout with weights!

And a separate study performed by the University of Liege in Belgium found that after six weeks elderly participants experienced:

  • 143 percent improvement in physical function
  • 77 percent improvement in equilibrium
  • 60 percent improvement in vitality
  • 57 percent improvement in the quality of walking
  • 41 percent reduction in pain
  • 23 percent improvement in general health

This was all accomplished by performing four one-minute sessions, three times a week, so in just 12 minutes a week!

Is Whole Body Vibration Right for You?

If you are simply interested in keeping your bones strong and healthy, I’ll detail some tips to help below. Diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle will be your keys to keeping your bones healthy.

However, for people who are unable to exercise, or even if you simply want to add another training tool to your fitness regimen, acceleration training platforms can be useful. There are actually quite a few research studies out on their potential uses, which include a range of benefits such as:

  • Increased muscle strength, especially explosive strength
  • Increased hormone secretion: IGF-1, testosterone, and HGH (human growth hormone)
  • Enhanced muscle and bone building
  • Increased flexibility and mobility
  • Increased circulation
  • Pain reduction
  • Increased lymphatic drainage
  • Cellulite reduction
  • Decreased cortisol levels
  • Increased secretion of serotonin and norepinephrine,

An acceleration training system is also useful for athletes to improve speed and vertical jump height and decrease warm-up time, making them alluring for professional sports teams.

There are a number of different machines on the market and I would not rush out and purchase one. I am just completing a four year comprehensive evaluation of this technology and I hope to report on it soon.

These machines can range from a few thousand dollars to well over ten thousand — so please wait for my report before you make this type of investment as there is a good chance you will purchase an inferior type of machine that will not provide all the benefits.

In the meantime, though, there is a much simpler technology that will provide many of the same benefits and that is a mini trampoline. You can get up to 3Gs on some tramps.

The two technologies are not mutually exclusive and I actually use both. I particularly enjoy the trampoline after a Peak 8 exercise and I use it to help stimulate lymphatic drainage of the toxins that are released after I exercise. Great recovery tool and actually somewhat fun to do.

The mini trampoline will definitely increase your bone density although not as much as a high-quality acceleration training machine.

More Tips for Building Your Bones

Most of you reading this will not have regular access to acceleration training or a mini trampoline, but you can still keep your bones strong. The simple guidelines that follow can help you maintain, or increase, your bone strength safely and naturally and actually work synergistically with these types of exercise to optimize your bone density:

  • Increase your consumption of vegetables and eat based on your body’s unique nutritional type. If you find it difficult to eat the recommended amount of vegetables you need daily, you can also try vegetable juicing.Eating high quality, organic, biodynamic, locally grown food will naturally increase your bone density and decrease your risk of developing osteoporosis.
  • Avoid processed foods. If you eat a diet full of processed foods, it will produce biochemical and metabolic conditions in your body that will decrease your bone density, so avoiding processed foods is a first step in the right direction.
  • Consume a healthy balance between omega-6 and omega-3 fats, and especially reduce or eliminate the amount of processed vegetable oils such as corn, canola, safflower, and soy that you consume.
  • Most everyone needs to take a high quality, animal-based omega 3 fat. I recommend krill oil, as I believe it’s a superior source of omega 3’s.
  • Avoid gluten, a grain protein that has been shown to decrease bone density. Gluten is found in wheat, barley, rye, oats and spelt.
  • Avoid soda and sugar, which increase bone damage by depleting your bones of calcium.
  • Avoid steroids, especially if you have asthma or any other autoimmune disease. Steroids increase your risk for osteoporosis.
  • Consider supplementing with vitamin K2 if you are not getting enough from food alone. Vitamin K2 serves as the biological “glue” that helps plug the calcium into your bone matrix. The dose is about 185 mcg per day.Fermented foods, such as natto, typically have the highest concentration of vitamin K found in the human diet and can provide several milligrams of vitamin K2 on a daily basis.
  • Optimize your vitamin D levels. Vitamin D builds your bone density by helping your body absorb calcium.
  • Exercise. Studies show that exercise is just as important to your bone health as eating a calcium-rich diet. Strength-building exercises like weight training are especially helpful here.
  • Consider natural progesterone, which can increase your bone strength. It does this by serving as a growth promoter for the osteoblasts (the cells that build bone). For more on progesterone, please review Complications Regarding Progesterone Cream.

Body Tone gets an effortless even shake

By Marco R. della Cava, USA TODAY

Those Beach Boys have been right all along: Vibrations are good, good, good.

Arriving just in time for New Year’s “I gained how much?” resolutions are vibration exercise platforms that seem to promise increased body tone with very little effort.

Among the machines getting a big push: the $3,500 Power Plate (the company says Madonna bought one after she fell off a horse), the $2,000 Ironman Resolution and the $495 Soloflex Whole Body Vibration Platform. “This is the greatest discovery since the Greeks and Romans perfected barbell exercises,” says Soloflex founder Jerry Wilson.

“Experiencing vibrations during a workout isn’t the be-all and end-all, but rather a great complement to what you’re already doing,” says Jasper Sidhu, president of The WAVE (Whole Body Advanced Vibration Exercise), whose $5,000 in-home version of a commercial platform arrives in January.

7 Great Tips For Healthful Weight Loss

The latest reports show that 2/3 of American adults are overweight or obese. As a result, we suffer health problems like diabetes and heart disease. The most common reasons we struggle with our weight:

1. Not doing the right kind of exercising. Exercises that build muscle are critical. Strength training keeps your metabolism going strong.

2. Not doing enough exercise. The body is designed to move, to work. Take the stairs, bend over and pick up trash, pull weeds, climb trees, play tag, make love; whatever you can do to activate your body. Becoming more physically active not only burns calories, it improves energy levels, sleep and mood.

3. Don’t drink soda pop. Eliminate it entirely from you life. In one study, researchers removed only one food item from the subject’s diets. Soda pop was the only removed item that caused weight loss. Avoid anything containing HFCS, High Fructose Corn Syrup. It’s in many prepackaged foods, even some breads.

4. Eating the wrong foods. Avoid sugar and anything made with refined flour. When you want something sweet, eat fruit. Eat a LOT of vegetables but avoid creamy dressings. Eat meat sparingly. Eat whole grain breads and cereals. Eat slowly. Eat with family or friends when possible. Don’t fight at the dinner table; a habit in too many families. Don’t eat in front of the TV, although that’s better than stabbing each other with forks should the conversation heat up.

5. Eating too much. That’s so obvious but everyone needs to know how much is too much. It’s a lot less than most people think. One thing that helps is to use smaller plates and bowls. Here’s a rule of thumb (not the rule that you can’t beat your wife with a stick bigger around than your thumb): Half your meal should be vegetables, a quarter protein and a quarter whole grains or starch (potatoes/pasta/bread).

6. Get enough sleep. The connection between sleeping more and weighing less is well established.

7. Do not go on rigid diets. Very low calorie diets lower one’s metabolism by causing the body to lose muscle, thus gain fat on fewer calories. Low calorie diets don’t work. Diets that eliminate entire categories of foods can lead to vitamin deficiencies. Fast food dining should be avoided. Take pleasure in preparing fresh locally grown foods and eating with friends and family.

National Institute of Health to spend $3 million on WBV Study

Crohn’s disease leaves children with weak bones and muscles even after the disease is brought under control.  165 children will be provided Whole Body Vibration platforms to stand on at home for ten minutes a day for 12 months.   To date, no vibration therapy devices are approved by prescription in the U.S.   Two WBV devices are now government approved in Canada, where big pharma doesn’t stifle non-drug competition.   The U.S. Army, the NIH and NASA have already funded enough studies on WBV to know that mechanical vibration therapy increases bone and muscle strength so the outcome of this study seems a foregone conclusion.

I’ve been a helicopter pilot for decades.  Some vibration frequencies and amplitudes can be extremely fatiguing, not a good thing when quick reactions are needed.   Overexposure to some vibrations can cause physical injury.  That’s why there are WBV exposure limits in the workplace.   The Soloflex WBV products allow one to stay within those OSHA limits at maximum amplitude (g-load) up to thirty minutes a day.

My home gym

Working out at home is definitely the way to go. It’s private. You can do it when you want. You can dress any way you want. I work out in my gown.

The exercises I do: squats, curls, deadlifts, overhead presses and bent over rows. My equipment: Soloflex dumbbells, Soloflex Rockit and Soloflex Whole Body Vibration (WBV) Platform and a Soloflex WBV Attachment on my Rockit.

Every other day I do squats on my Rockit. On the other days I do my upper-body exercises while standing on my WBV platform.

The good vibrations have upgraded my workout. Vibrating while weight training produces better gains than weight training alone.

I am convinced that weight lifting is the essential exercise. Nothing works as well at shaping your body and raising you metabolism (burning calories at rest).

My tips:

  1. Begin weight training today.
  2. Do compound exercises. I do 12 reps of overhead presses, curls, bentover rows and deadlifts, all in one set. I do 3 sets.
  3. Don’t use heavy weights.
  4. Make sure squats are included in your routine. Squats work more muscles than any other exercise. Do these until you’re breathing hard.
  5. Start slow and light.. If you over-do you are more likely to quit.

This doesn’t have to take a lot of your time, about 15 minutes a day.

If you exercise at home I’d really like to see what equipment you use and how you use it.

Dr Oz confirms what we’ve been saying

A quote from Dr. Oz’s book ‘YOU Being Beautiful’...  “Biomechanical stimulation is getting more and more attention for its effect of giving muscles more energy. You stand on a machine or plate, and the machine vibrates to stimulate muscle energy and strength. Early research shows that the technique provides the benefits of flexibility, energy and better coordination and balance. These machines are used in gyms, by professional sports teams, and by patients suffering from chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia.”

Dr. Oz knows what he’s talking about. He has been on several  Discovery Health programs (Dr. Oz is the chief medical consultant on the show) and has written a series of best selling books, YOU on a diet, YOU Staying Young, YOU being Beautiful and many others (he’s produced over 400 publications).  His latest gig… “health expert on Oprah”! Last month during the ‘Live Your Best Life’ week, he broke down the basics to good health. People love him because he knows what he’s talking about and his advice produces the desired results! Dr. Oz has a worldwide following. Besides the obvious message of ‘eat right and exercise’, he keeps an open mind about new and innovative tools we can use to achieve our best health. He is currently at the forefront of the health and fitness industry.

It’s explained in several of his books that weight lifting will; increase bone density, ramp up your metabolism, improve your immune system, keep you strong, injury free and give you the beautiful, shapely body you’ve always wanted. And biomechanical stimulation (WBV) can help you achieve those goals faster. He is strengthening the message that we’ve been broadcasting at Soloflex for over 30 years! Nice work Dr. Oz.

Be the Hope and Change You Expect President Obama To Be

a healthy hopefull enviroment

a healthy hopefull enviroment

When are we going to realize that the new hope and change that President Obama keeps reminding us we need - is needed personally as well.  We can not change the world, the community, nor the family if we can not change ourselves.  We have the power if we are willing to save us from ourselves.  We are a nation of “someone take care of that for me”.  We rarely stop to ask ourselves, “can I make the change that matters”.  It can and will happen when we take charge of ourselves by better living.  What I mean is…if I feel good and am taking care of myself physically and emotionally I have more strength to recognize hope and change.  If I am eating right, exercising, reading what needs to be read, really listening, caring and sharing change has already begun with me.

When we are preaching to others to have hope for change you better practice what you preach.  People will listen when led by example.  President Obama has been able to tell us we need hope and change because he himself is willing to make it start with him.  He must take care of himself and then he can take care of his people.

As I have already mentioned, our life style will give us the power to get the job done.  Exercise and eating right will not only give us this it will help our community to thrive because we will not need to take as much from the available health care funds.  America is in a health care crisis.  We need to start with preventative medicine and a healthy life style; it is the beginning. We will also help our environment.  Eating raw and natural foods and local is important.  Not sprayed with pesticides or injected with hormones will keep the earth cleaner and safer for our kids.  Giving them hope and change when they grow older it will all be there for them; safe and clean.

Exercise will give us the strength and clarity it takes to be a leader for you, your family, your world. President Obama stays fit knowing that it single handily will be the difference between the energy to help us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  He must be ready to react at any given moment and if he is out of shape physically or emotionally he can not do his very important job of offering hope and change.  We are in the same boat with our families.  If we are not physically fit we can not lead our families to better things, everyday.

Working out is the key to success.  We must get up and move.  Weight lifting is probably the most important type of physical fitness.  Cardio and stretching are still very important but we must build muscles to give us the power to go all the time and live a long life.  Weight lifting helps with blood flow and, the obvious, strong muscles to carry you for you life.  If we are in a position of not being able to do a weight lifting routine nor a cardio routine there are now great options for us.  Whole Body Vibration is one of the most important addition to our lives if you want to save ourselves.  It is proven that vibration therapy will increase strength and agility, build muscle and reduce fat, increase metabolism, improve balance and flexibiliy, combat osteoporosis and increase bone density, help with incontinence, relieve chronic pain, increase motor control.  Have I given you enough reasons?  By simply standing, sitting, or laying on a WBV piece of equipment we can have these great things happen to us.  If you want to or are able to you can add weights, yoga, pilates, or your own current routine.  Why would you not want to feel great for less effort than ever before, only 10-20 minutes a day.  We are busy people but we all have that kind of time to make sure hope and change begins with us.

Whole Body Vibration Platform by Soloflex………

Various Techniques and Equipment Used with Vibration Training

There are different kinds of techniques and equipment used with whole body vibration platforms. We wanted to share a few ideas and with you!

Static Exercises & Stretches (no visible movement): squat, lunge, plank pose,
( front & side ), boat pose (sitting position with arms and legs up), downward dog (upside down shoulder press)

Push-up handles

Push-up handles

Dynamic Exercises (full range of motion): push-ups, squats, lunges, 1 or 2 arm row, tricep kickback, pullover rows, calf raises, bench press, crunches, side bends, overhead press, bicep curls, etc. The amount of exercises you can do is only limited to your imagination.

Various equipment used with WBV platforms can include: rubber bands with handles, those are great for putting under the platform for a variety of pushing and pull exercises. I have used push-up handles a few times on my platform, it’s good to mix it up. And, of course, hand weights are always great! The wonderful thing about the WBV platform is that you can get a full body workout just using your body weight.

Soloflex adjustable handweights

You can also do yoga or pilates routines on the platform too. Put your DVD in and follow along, just don’t lay your head directly on the platform, it won’t hurt you but it’s not comfortable.
